Desk Work

The desk neck, explained without drama

Why the base of the skull aches by four o'clock, and three small changes that actually stick.

By mid-afternoon the head has drifted forward of the shoulders a few centimetres at a time. The muscles at the base of the skull are now holding a heavier lever than they were built for, and they complain in the only way they can.

The fixes that last are boring. Raise the screen until the top line of text sits at eye level. Put the keyboard close enough that elbows rest by the ribs. Stand up when a call starts, every call.

Pressing the two hollows under the skull for thirty slow breaths helps in the moment. The screen height is what stops you needing to.
